Chicago

Chicago is an American rock band that was formed in 1967. The band's founders are Robert Lamm, Peter Cetera, and James Pankow. The members of the band were originally from the midwestern United States, with the exception of drummer Danny Seraphine who was born in Canada.

Early Career

Chicago has had multiple guitarists and drummers throughout the years. Guitarist Terry Kath died on January 23rd 1978 as a result of health complications after accidentally shooting himself while cleaning his gun. This information came just months after guitarist Donnie Dacus left Chicago to join Glenn Frey's solo project "Hotel California." After losing two guitarists it seemed like their luck turned around for a brief moment when they landed guitarist/songwriter Bill Champlin. Unfortunately, this change could not last as Champlin left the band just one year later due to creative differences. During this time, the band added guitarist Dawayne Bailey. Although Chicago had now found two guitarists it would be short lived due to the fact that both Bailey and Seraphine were fired by manager Peter Katsis in 1982. Now without a drummer for over three years, Chicago introduced their new drummer Tris Imboden (formerly of REO Speedwagon). After years of performing together, Imboden was officially introduced into the band in 1985.

Highlights

Prior to joining Chicago, Lamm had previously worked with drummer Danny Seraphine. The two had worked together in a band called The Big Thing since 1967, along with Peter Cetera. The other members of Chicago joined after the breakup of another band that was fronted by Lamm called The Big Thing in 1967. Pankow was the only member to join Chicago from The Big Thing, while Cetera and Seraphine were added later.

Robert Lamm is an American songwriter, keyboardist, vocalist and musical director who helped found Chicago in 1967. After being friends with Reg Owen Jr., Lamm met James Pankow while attending DePaul University. By 1968, the two had formed a band called "Chicago Transit Authority". The band released four studio albums between 1969 and 1976. The band's name is derived from Lamm's hometown, Chicago, Illinois.

Chicago is noted for its lengthy musical catalog of hits which include "Beginnings", "Colour My World", "It Ain't Over 'til It's Over", "Wishing You Were Here", "Hard to Say I'm Sorry", and the number one single, "Saturday in the Park" (from the eponymous album). The band's 1980 album, "Chicago XIV", was the first Chicago album to peak at number 1 on USA Today's pop albums chart.

Peter Cetera is an American singer, songwriter, musician and record producer who is best known as the lead vocalist for Chicago. He wrote almost all of the songs on the band's studio albums, but also sang lead vocals on several others. He released his first solo album, "Headed for a Heartbreak", in 1985 which proved to be a commercial failure.
