Early Life

Born in Portland, Oregon,  Botti had his earliest musical training with Eddie Durham in the Portland Public School System. After high school, he attended the Berklee College of Music on a full scholarship where he graduated magna cum laude in 1978.

He switched to trumpet while at Berklee and immersed himself in jazz music. It was during this time that he was introduced to the trumpeter Louis Anderson who convinced him that he should also become proficient on other instruments

Career

Botti has released many albums over his career. He is well known for collaborations with artists such as Paul McCartney and Sting. As a solo artist he has released ten albums and many compilations.

 

Botti's first international success came when he was chosen to write and perform the theme song for the "Jurassic Park" film in 1993. He followed up his first single with another track on "Jurassic Park 2" in 1997 along with Alfredo Sesto working again on the soundtrack. Botti started out as a solo artist, but began forming partnerships with other artists very early on in his career. On some of his albums, he was featured as both lead trumpeter and co-writer.

 

Botti has over the years featured as a side man on many albums by various artists. One of his first collaborations was with David Sanborn in 1989 on "The Best of Everything". He also worked with another artist named Richard Marx. Together they were featured on one of Marx's albums called "Rush Street" released in 1990. Botti has been a regular member of Sting's band since 1993. He was also the main trumpeter for Paul McCartney's US tour from 1999 to 2000, and played at the Concert for New York City after the September 11th attacks, as well as the 2002 Winter Olympics opening ceremony in Salt Lake City. In 2007 he performed with McCartney on a track of a concept album entitled "Electric Arguments" released by the Scottish band The Fireman.

 

In addition to his work with other artists, Botti has also released a number of solo albums. In 2000 he released the album "Night Sessions" which featured Sting, Paula Cole and Billy Childs amongst others. He continued to produce albums on an irregular schedule. In 2005 he was chosen to be the voice of the National Football League's "Play 60" campaign, in which he recorded two studio-produced tracks: one for adults and another for kids. He ran in the 2005 New York City Marathon and plans to participate again in 2007.
